The White's, The Tidd's and The Carters

The purpose of this blog is to share the information that I have gathered about Lilian Adeline White's ancestors.  The White's, The Tidd's and The Carter's.

The White's from Warrington, Cheshire, England

Lilian's father was Gilbert Greenall White he migrated to Nelson, NZ along with two of his brothers in 1895 at the age of 29.  This blog includes information about the family Gilbert went on to have in New Zealand, as well as his siblings, parents and aunts and uncles.

The Tidd's from Nelson, New Zealand

Lilian's mother was Mary Ann Tidd, a daughter of one of the early settler families to Nelson, NZ.  This blog includes information on Mary Ann's children as well as her siblings, her parents and aunts and uncles.

The Carter's from Aldershot, Hampshire, England

Lilian's Grandmother was Roza Carter (Gilbert Greenall White's mother).  The Carter family is very interesting as Roza's father was a British Consulate in the 1830's and had postings in Spain and Chile.  He kept diaries of his postings which make really interesting reading.  I am using this blog to share some of this information. 


I am Kirstine Boyd, the youngest daughter of William and Jeanette Boyd of Invercargill, New Zealand.  Jeanette is the eldest daughter of Lilian Adeline White and Albert Litchfield.  I live in Melbourne and during the pandemic we endured some very long lock downs which gave me plenty of time to research the family ancestry!

Lilian Sadler White  1861 - 1939 Lilian Adeline White's Aunt - Sister to her father Gilbert Greenall White Born on 30 March 1861 in Bloomsbury, Middlesex, Lilian was the fourth child of Henry Brown White and Rosa Carter. Lilian Sadler never married and in later years lived with her sister Violet Ada Francis. Violet was one year older than Lilian and also never married; when Violet died in 1930 she left her money to Lilian. This photo was in a beautiful art nouveau style round wooden frame owned by my Nanna Lilian Adeline. In June of 1937 my Nana, Lilian Adeline travelled to Warrington to stay with and care for her "maiden Aunt" and namesake Lilian Sadler.  Nana was 27 at the time and unmarried, Lilian Sadler was 76. We don't know very much about Lilian Sadler's life apart from a few stories that we can recall Nana telling us. George Frederick Freeland White 1862 - 1935 Lilian Adeline White's Uncle - Brother to her father Gilbert White Note Freeland was his Mothers maiden name. George was born, educated, worked, married and died in Warrington, UK. Born in September 1862, George was educated at Boteler Grammar School - a very prestigious school founded in 1526. In 1886 he as admitted as a solicitor and was articled to his father's firm Nicholson, White and Nicholson. He served as Assistant Deputy Clerk to the Justices and in 1901 he became Clerk to the Magistrates. In 1902 he was in practice with his brother Edward Aubrey White at 3 Egypt Street, Warrington. He married Dora Bowden in 1904 and together they had three children; Elizabeth, William and Cyril.
